Keeping members safe from fraud

Keeping members safe from fraud

Consumer fraud is the most common type of fraud, and fraudsters are getting more creative as the public becomes more aware of common scams. Protect your members by helping them understand threats, and what your credit union does to help them keep their finances safe.

What members can do:

Remind your members regularly of the basics of fraud prevention such as:
  • Maintain strong passwords
  • Do not open links or attachments in suspicious emails
  • Keep personal information such as social security numbers and birth dates secure
  • How your credit union would reach out to them, especially by phone and text message
Also, make sure they know what to do if they think they are a victim of fraud.

What you can do to help them:

Ensure your members know and are using all the benefits their accounts offer, including:
  • Credit monitoring
  • Notifications on transactions, account updates, etc.
  • How fraudulent transactions are handled
Prevention work within your credit union will also protect your members. Taking steps to ensure employees are trained on the latest methods of cyber-attacks, data protection systems are tested regularly, and physical information is disposed of properly are keys to keeping everyone secure.
